Event Overview

The North Carolina Inspectors Challenge (Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Inspector Challenge) is an annual competition and advanced training event for NC Highway Patrol CVE Troopers specializing in commercial vehicle safety.

This premier event focuses on sharpening advanced inspection skills for:

• Commercial trucks
• Hazardous materials (HazMat)
• Buses

The Challenge goes beyond routine roadside inspections. It is designed to test the ability of inspectors to identify complex safety violations, apply current regulations, and demonstrate technical expertise under competition standards.

This is the only event dedicated to testing, recognizing, and awarding excellence in commercial motor vehicle inspection.

Participants will:

• Receive training on the latest commercial motor vehicle safety trends, technologies, and standards
• Practice advanced inspection procedures
• Exchange ideas, techniques, and field experience with fellow inspectors
• Strengthen professional networks across the state

The Grand Champion will advance to represent North Carolina at the national level.

Wednesday, June 3, 2026

Off-Site Training Center

Training 

• Inspectors receive event materials, manuals, and tools
• Participants arranged into teams
• Overview sessions on:
  • GHM (General Hazardous Materials)
  • Bus inspections
  • CVSA Out-of-Service (OOS) written test (individual score)

Team Events

• Haz-Mat Olympics
• CVSA Olympics

Additional training class (time permitting):

• Inspection of electric parking brake systems

Briefing and competition begins

Competition Categories

• Level I Inspections
• Bus Inspections
• GHM Inspections
• Bulk or OBP GHM Inspections

All timed inspections and written exams will reflect the same standards and time limits used at the national NAIC competition.

Lunch to follow

Awards Luncheon

The final three awards will be presented, including:

• Overall Top Performers
• Team Recognition
• Grand Champion

The Grand Champion will earn the opportunity to represent North Carolina at the North American Inspectors Challenge (NAIC).
